LOST – Answers to the Questions

Lost is one of those shows that despite its excellence, it has its flaws in terms of allowing the audience to sometimes keep up with its diverse and occasional complex storylines. If you understand the show, but there are a few things that you might be wondering about still, despite the show having finished back in 2010, below we have answers to a few questions with answers. Check them out and feel free to leave any questions you may have about the show in the comments and we’ll answer them as soon as possible.

Question

In Series 5 Hugo and Miles have a conversation about time travel and the situation they are in. Miles thinks he is being a know it all, until Hurley finally says ‘How come when Sayid attacks Ben in the hatch, Ben doesn’t remember Sayid from when he shot him when he was a kid?’

Answer

The thinking on this is that when Richard took Ben to the Temple to be healed from being shot, one of the prices of the healing was that Ben lost some or all of his memories. When kid Ben went back to DHARMA the Incident was over and all the time-travelers were gone to their proper time of 2007. There is nothing in Seasons 2-4 to suggest adult Ben knew Juliet, Sawyer, Jin, Miles and Daniel were from the 70’s. And adult Ben in Season 5 clearly does not know Sayid, Jack etc. went back in time since he was so ready to follow “Locke” when he thought they were supposed to find them all. And whenever he talked about the Oceanic Six going back to the island for their friends, nothing suggested Ben knew they were in another time.

Question

At the end of Series 4 episode 5, the one where Desmond in switching between his past self and his current self on the freighter, there is a part right at the end where Daniel Faraday opens his notebook and it says ‘if anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be my constant’… What does it mean?

Answer

A Constant is someone or something that means so much to you it is able to restore you to who you are across time and distance. Desmond’s mind on the freighter in 2004 was saved by seeing his Constant Penny in 1996 and then hearing on the phone in 2004, it balanced him again. Daniel is a physicist dealing with time travel. His experiments have caused him metal problems and memory loss. Because Desmond is “special” in the rules of time travel, Daniel thinks if anything happens to him while experimenting on the island, Desmond will be the one to stabilize him.

Question

In Series 4 when Locke and Ben first visit the cabin, a voice says ‘help meeee’ in a croaky weird voice. What was that?

Answer

We can’t be sure. But it’s likely to have been The Man in Black. We know from Season 5 it was not “Jacob’s” cabin like Ben said because Ben never met Jacob until the Season 5 finale and because Ileana and Jacob’s bodyguards burned it down because “someone” else was using it”.  The Man in Black later admitted to being Christian Shepard on the island and he was the one who warped Claire’s mind for 3 years and Claire went to the cabin in Season 4 because she followed “her father.” Plus “Christian” encouraged Locke to die to bring the Oceanic Six back. The Oceanic Six coming back with Locke’s body helped the Man in Black pose as Locke and get Jacob dead and almost leave the island.

Question

What exactly is the island?

Answer

The Island is a place that is implied to be vital to the world with unique possibilities like healing Locke’s legs, letting Jin father a child. Its unique properties attract scientist like DHARMA. The island is special so it causes conflict that can lead to death, but it can also lead to a new start for people like Rose and Bernard. In short it is a special and powerful place that people can try to use for their ambitions whether good (example: Hurley) or bad (example: Charles/Ben conflict).

Question

In Series 3, Juliet kills a man allowing Sawyer and Kate to escape Hydra Island. Later on, someone states “we’re very strict when it comes to killing one of our own”. Juliet is nearly sentenced to death for it… Then in Series 5, whilst they are travelling through time they come across a young Charles Widmore, who gets captured by Locke, Sawyer and Juliet. To stop one of the others giving Juliet information, Charles snaps his neck. So why is Charles alright to kill whoever he pleases but years later Juliet is sentenced to death temporarily?

Answer

Young Charles killed the guy decades before whatever Juliet did, the leader in 1954 may not have had the same rules as Ben. And when young Charles killed it was to protect the Others information from strangers, Juliet was deliberately helping the enemy in Season 3, she was a traitor then.

Question

In Series 5, Episode 1, Richard gives Locke a compass saying that ‘the next time you see me John, I’m not going to recognize you, so you need to give me this’. What is the relevance of the compass? In Series 4 when Richard visits the child version of Locke, Richard presents Locke with a number of items asking him to pick which were his. I vaguely remember a compass being within those items, leading me to believe it has something to do with that?

Answer

John received the compass from Richard and Richard said John would have to die after he left the island-as Richard patched up John’s leg from being shot by Ethan during the time-flashes. John then went to 1954. 1954 Richard did not know who John was, John claimed to be the Others leader and told Richard when and where he would be born in 1956. Richard was at the hospital at John’s birth and has been shadowing him all his life waiting for John to be ready for the island, the compass test in the orphanage and the “science camp” offer Locke got in high school are signs of that.

Richard kept the compass with him until even after the crash of flight 316. In late Season 5 Richard and Ben followed “Locke” (really the man In Black now) to the spot a spot in the jungle where “Locke” told Richard that another John would soon appear and to give that John the compass tell that John he had to die. We know John dying was part of the Man in Black’s plan. The compass goes 2007 Richard (as told by “Locke”-the Man in Black) to time-flashing Locke who was shot, to 1954 Richard who has it until 2007. One big circle.
